Description
The intersex flag, created by Morgan Carpenter of Intersex Human Rights Australia in 2013, features a yellow field with a purple circle in the center. It was designed to be “non-derivative,” representing wholeness, bodily autonomy, and the right to be who and how one wants to be, avoiding traditional gender-associated colors like blue or pink.
-
- Yellow Field: A bright yellow color represents a reclamation of the color, often used to avoid traditional gendered associations and as a nod to “yellow for hermaphrodites” stories, standing out with pride.
- Purple Circle: An “unbroken and unornamented” purple circle symbolizes intersex people being complete, whole, and “our potentialities,” fighting for bodily autonomy and against human rights violations
- Purpose: It was designed to represent the intersex community without relying on stereotypes or misconceptions, and it is free to be used by any intersex person or organization for community-affirming, human rights contexts.
